Vital Records

Minnesota vital records are kept in the County Recorders office. Birth and death records usually begin in 1870. Only a small percentage of the births and deaths were recorded in these early years. The Minnesota Department of Health has duplicate copies of birth records since 1900 and deaths since 1908. Marriage records are generally recorded from 1958 and divorce decrees from 1970 and remain housed at the county level. All copies, whether certified or uncertified, cost $11.00 for death and marriage certificates. Birth certificates cost $14.00. Minnesota law provides for an hourly charge to search for records when the date of the event is not known.  An application and notarization is required for birth and death records (New law effective August 1, 2000).

The Minnesota Historical Society has a Death Certificate Online Search site at:
http://people/mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm
The database provides the name and date of death between 1908 and 1946 and a copy of the certificate can be ordered.
